Concrete Driveway Paint Reviews That Deid Over Night
Guys, don't think that just because I accept a house blog that I'm e'er super gung-ho well-nigh getting started on our long list of things we want to fix up here. That is definitely not the case. I procrastinate a lot, sometimes because I'one thousand scared of making the wrong choice, considering I just tin can't make up my mind, or because something is a BIG chore and I simply. Don't. Want. To. Get. Started.
Ane house task I've put off doing for a long time – more than ii years in fact – is painting our old concrete driveway. Look, I approximate that should be driveways. Nosotros technically take ii (on the side is a bay for a gunkhole or trailer, visitor car etc) plus the paving in the garage and the backyard, besides. And so that makes for a Big area to be painted. But we have finally started – and bitten off a dainty chunk.
Permit'southward take a quick walk through memory lane and have a await at what our driveway and carport expanse looked like before nosotros started our exterior reno.
Here's the firm when we bought it! Let's take a minute to recollect our beautiful quondam wisteria. Sob. I used to trim it then devotedly. Then one day information technology died and I was devastated. As you tin can run into below, information technology actually ties the (outdoor) room together. I mean that literally, I think the wisteria was actually property the sometime carport together. RIP.
Also RIP to my beloved onetime Pulsar which I ran into the ground like the Italian racecar driver I was in a past life.
I'd already painted the physical driveway you can see beneath with a paving pigment, years ago. Looks good, no?
When nosotros did our exterior renovation to clad our house, part of it entailed demolished the old single carport in favour of a new double carport and nosotros extended the existing driveway to create more than parking space – my husband'south dream fulfilled. Two cars parked next, non tandem! Mr Nerd says in retrospect, he wishes we had knocked the old driveway out completely and redone the whole matter because the cracks in the old driveway annoy his tender OCD self. But I shuddered at the idea of getting rid of all that concrete and somehow managed to convince him it would all look practiced when it was all painted the same colour…..
Cut to more two years later on and we even so hadn't gotten around to painting or sealing the driveway. I remember my lack of enthusiasm was partly because a) it'southward a big job and b) I have tried two different kinds of pavement/driveway paint in the past, and I was non impressed with either of them. See that reddish section in the picture beneath? That's what I painted years agone, using one of those kinds of paving paints. I've likewise used some other make to practise the driveway and paths of my parents' house, and it turned out to await equally boilerplate after a while. I know, I know. We alive in Australia, the sun is a monster, concrete gets hot, no wonder that paint fades blah blah apathetic. Even so, I but could not become excited about going to all the effort of putting money and energy into painting something substantially large, only to have information technology looking similar crud a few years later on. Who would?!
Anyway, information technology being left unfinished has always bugged me until recently when I consulted Google to help me notice the all-time production for painting a driveway, and who did my searches lead me to, simply someone I really know – Michelle of Jarrah Jungle web log, who is right hither in Perth as well! Michelle actually doesn't blog at Jarrah Jungle whatever more, merely her web log is a crazy expert resource – they wrote all about renovating their older habitation and doing up the gardens and she has really skillful tips and nice honest, open information.
I was really impressed by how their driveway looked in her photos and decided to endeavor the aforementioned Crommelin product she used.
I bought the solvent-based Crommelin DiamondCoat Tintable Sealer in an 8L tin, and and so you add in the colour condiment – I got a 1L tin of the Crommelin DiamondCoat Tint in Basalt. Yous tin can become it at Bunnings. The girl at the paint desk mixed information technology up for me. We concluded upward needing another big can for the second coat (and we've all the same got more to paint on the other driveway and out the back so I'm guessing we're going to need much more! Eating an elephant over here). The big tins toll $151 each and the 1L tint pots were $twoscore. Then allow's say this driveway cost a bit over $400 to do, covering the cost of your roller and brush.
Meet the new physical in that movie higher up? As much as Mr Nerd and I liked the low-cal color of the new concrete and I like how lighter colours make hardscaping await so much more open up and airy, I know in that location is something forgiving about dark colours especially for something that will get a lot of traffic, oil marks, dirt, bore water etc. So similar Michelle, nosotros besides opted for the Basalt finish, which is a nice deep grey. The Crommelin sealer is meant to be perfect for apply on both new and old, stained concrete that has seen better days, and hey! We had both.
And then I bought the concrete sealer and stuck it in the shed for like, I don't know, 3, four, five months? And so, after ten months of no community transmission of coronavirus in Western Australia (nosotros are INCREDIBLY lucky to be living in this part of the world. I think nigh people living in places like London all the fourth dimension) a hotel quarantine security officer tested positive for COVID, and last Lord's day afternoon, it was appear that a Perth-wide lockdown would exist enforced from 6pm that nighttime for five days (the night earlier Little Nerd was due to start school).
If there's ever a fourth dimension to get not bad on some home DIY you've put off for years, lockdown in summertime might exist information technology.
Showtime Mr Nerd used our Bosch pressure washer (nosotros have this i, which I was gifted for a sponsored post years ago) to requite the driveway a really good clean and a degreaser spray to help scrub off the oil marks. We tried to pull as many weeds out of the cracks every bit possible and swept it heaps.
When it was dry I did the edges of the driveway with a big brush and all over the indents every bit I knew the roller wouldn't get into those.
Brand sure you keep mixing your sealer throughout and so it stays nice and consequent. Here's me looking like a dweeb.
Subsequently the edges information technology was time to roller – I concluded up using a large Monarch roller on a pole and tray.
Nosotros left the offset coat to dry out for a couple of hours but it dries so quickly (probably because it was really hot – just make certain information technology'due south not above 35 degrees when you make up one's mind to paint considering it will be besides hot). And so nosotros did the second coat.
Then it was done! Information technology can take light human foot traffic in 24 hours and is fully cured in 7 days.
I was impressed with the quality of the Crommelin sealer from the infinitesimal I started to utilise it. It went on so nicely and although it seems really runny when you look at information technology in the tin (nowhere near as thick and goopy equally pavement pigment) the concrete seemed to drink it up without losing the opacity and colour besides much. I'm wondering if it'south because this product is a sealer, as opposed to a pavement pigment, and if that'south the big difference? We got the Satin finish, which is a picayune scrap sleeky but not too much, which wouldn't have suited our business firm. Even the cracks in the quondam parts don't bother us every bit much now.
Anyhow, nosotros volition see how it holds upward with time – but for the time being I'm really happy with it. Of form, it's not going to look as good as a whole make new driveway professionally painted. The kids have already dusted information technology up with their bikes (Little Nerd learned how to ride without preparation wheels the second twenty-four hours of lockdown!) Just nosotros went out this morning time and when we got home seeing the driveway all nicely painted and homogenous subsequently information technology looked tired and piecemeal for so long merely fabricated me then happy. I know…. I'm definitely a house nerd.
Now nosotros just need to get the enthusiasm upwards to do the other $.25 I haven't shown hither however! Maya ten
